The following table is an alphabetical listing of various types of genealogical and historical materials in the library, including books, folders, notebooks, and microfilm.

Under the column heading “Location” the word “gene.” means the material is in the Genealogy section of the library and may be used only at the library. The word “ref.” means the material is in the Reference section of the library and may only be used at the library. The word “lib.” means the material is a regular library book and may be checked out.

Under the column heading “Format” the word “micro” stands for microfilm; there is a microfilm reader in the Genealogy section for viewing this material.

The names listed in the “Surnames” column are not, in most cases, a complete listing of the surnames in the reference; rather, they are just a few of the names common to Alleghany County since the early days.

Other books may have been added to our collection since this table was prepared. They will be added to the table as time permits.
